1 Only Fools and Horses Owner of two memorable theme songs, both written and performed by series creator John Sullivan. The first was a Chas and Dave-style lament explaining the programme's title ("Why do only fools and horses work?"), while the closer was a sort of cockney Subterranean Homesick Blues. For years I misheard its refrain, "c'est magnifique", as "sad man defeat", which I took to be a comment on Del's endlessly thwarted ambition. It was a let-down to discover that this apparent howl of poignancy wasn't intended.
