IT WAS intriguing that in the week when two 60-year-olds pulled on their tracksuits and took up the reins of full-time coaching again, one was hailed as a saviour and the other questioned as a throwback.

Brian Ashton took over as England coach while Richie Dixon slipped into Netherdale as Steve Bates' new assistant. Clearly, the two men are working in different spheres and Dixon viewed merely by the Scottish Rugby Union as "interim", helping fill the void left by Alan Tait and George Graham turning full-time with Scotland, but the former Scotland coach insisted yesterday that he views his Borders "homecoming" as more than a mere stop-gap.
