If you can't afford to go to Legoland this year, then visit Chicken Village instead. This eccentric attraction, which is part of the beautiful Kailzie Gardens in the Scottish Borders, is poultry paradise.

In a sheltered green enclave, near a greenhouse, you'll find miniature forts, a prison and a castle, each of which is inhabited by a different breed of pedigree hen. These fluffy beasts have their own spurs and fascinators, and boast evocative names such as Salmon Faverolles and Black Cochins.
