MUSIC, WAR OF THE WORLDS, CLYDE AUDITORIUM, GLASGOW ****

THERE was a lot riding on this show: a full-scale production, a full orchestra and performers all helping Jeff Wayne to try and make real something that has existed in the fans' heads for four decades. After a slightly ropey opening, it settled into a virtually note- perfect performance of the album; both Justin Hayward and Chris Thompson reprised their roles perfectly, while Russell Watson and Tara Blaise managed to improve on the original. The evening was stolen, though, by Alexis James as the artillery man, sounding uncannily like David Essex, who first played the role.
