MARKS & Spencer yesterday shrugged off the overall high street gloom with a fourth-quarter performance that smashed market forecasts and sent its shares to their highest level for almost eight years.

On a day when the UK retail sector recorded its biggest monthly slump since last July, M&S posted Q4 like-for-like sales up 6.8 per cent. General merchandise was the stand-out, up 8.2 per cent against expectations of around 1 per cent.
