THE decision by global drinks giant Diageo to reject the Scottish Government's proposal, which it hoped would avoid the closure of the company's Kilmarnock bottling plant and Port Dundas grain distillery is, first and foremost, a devastating blow to the 900 workers set to lose their jobs.

With the economy still in recession and unemployment predicted to continue to rise this year, it will be very difficult for those left jobless to find alternative employment. The knock-on effect of these job losses for the economy of Kilmarnock will be severe.
