HE was the star pupil of his year but James Blair never got the medal that recognised his academic brilliance. A shortage of gold caused by post-war austerity meant Dr Blair held the Harris Gold Medal for Dux - the High School of Dundee's top honour - in name only.

In the decades since 1946, Dr Blair gave up hope of ever receiving the award. But after a chance meeting with the prestigious private school's current rector, Dr Blair finally picked up his medal yesterday at a special prizegiving ceremony - 60 years to the day after he was first awarded it.
