RATHER then sitting with feet up on the desk, Jocky Scott should perhaps be assuming the opposite of a relaxed pose. The last time Dundee began a new year at the top of the First Division, the club's manager was sacked within weeks.

It is a well-known story, but one which bears repeating. John McCormack's doughty Dundee team of 1997/98 looked on course to join the top tier in time for the maiden season of the newly-created Scottish Premier League. They were five points clear at the end of January and had not lost in six previous outings. But the club's new owners, the Marr brothers, decided that a change of manager was necessary if Dundee were to cross the line still in front of the chasing pack. On the Sunday following a 3-1 win at Stirling Albion and reputedly having just returned home from chapel, McCormack was sacked. All this is familiar detail, particularly to Scott. After all, he was the man asked to finish the job. It is something he plans to do again, 12 years later.
