Summary
ATHLETICS is traditionally the cornerstone of the Commonwealth Games, as it is of the Olympics, and there have been several notable occasions at both events in which Scottish track competitors have set a stirring example for their colleagues in other sports to emulate. Allan Wells, Liz McColgan and Yvonne Murray ensured that Scotland won gold in athletics at every Commonwealth Games between 1978 and 1994, for instance, and on each of those five occasions there was a strong supporting cast of silver and bronze medallists.
At the last two Games, by contrast, Scots athletes have had little success. Allison Curbishley's silver medal in the 400 metres was the only top-three finish in Kuala Lumpur eight years ago, while the haul at Manchester 2002 was just one better - silver in the same event for Lee McConnell, and decathlon bronze for Jamie Quarry.
