AN OPTIONAL special dividend on shares that would then be cancelled looks to be the elegant solution to the saga of the Cayzer feud hanging over the fortunes of the investment trust Caledonia.

Although it has produced colourful copy for newspapers, in the noses-jammed-against-patrician-windows vein, the three years of infighting have not been good at all for Caledonia. The Cayzers and Caledonia have been joined at the hip, and the acrimony - though usually mellifluously expressed, it must be said - has led to an investment trust with a wobbly walk in the public perception.
