REALITY TV is surely one of the most divisive genres in the history of television. The various formats bring both praise and vilification of the channels and production teams that come up with them, such is their ability to both enthral and infuriate audiences.

The current crisis at ITV is regularly linked to the horrifying Love Island - despite the fact that its tiny audience of two million is just one of many problems afflicting the channel. The reason it enjoys such a high profile is because as a reality show it had the potential to capture the imagination of a whole nation. The first series of Big Brother in 2000 united the UK against Nasty Nick, and many of the decade's more memorable TV moments have come from that show's successors and spin-offs.
