Ahead of a new TV series examining the role of Scots at war throughout history, from the Battle of Killiecrankie to the war in Afghanistan, Emma Cowing finds out what makes our countrymen among the best fighters in the world

ON 7 AUGUST, 1880, 10,000 British soldiers, many of them Scots, set out on a 320-mile march through Afghanistan to Kandahar. Their mission was to rescue British troops who had been forced into the city following a defeat in the south of the country, as part of a greater military plan to withdraw the British Army from the country.

Shooting History

Conditions were harsh. Under the leadership of General Frederick Roberts, the men marched through hostile territory from 4am until 2pm, facing temperatures of 52C during the day and sub-zero conditions at night. Many didn't survive the journey. Others were struck lame, or wounded in skirmishes along the way.
