CHIEF McConnell's trip to Malawi left Shaman Wallace to take care of tribal health fears at Holyrood question time. He did it well. That benign, slightly goofy, smile and avuncular manner conceal an under-rated master of the evil arts of avoiding the question and bamboozling the opposition while distilling a little venom in passing.

Some of it was for Nicola Sturgeon, who, full of vim and with right fist punching air as if the missing First Minister was on the end of it, had welcomed Jim to the hot seat for the last time before his retirement from Lib Dem leadership and Deputy First Ministership.
