IT'S ALWAYS been tough at the top, but you get the feeling it's about to get tougher. Even as Tiger Woods, licking his wounds, not to mention his chops, prepares to make his return to the happy hunting grounds this week, the talk around the water holes is of a skinny young amateur from New Zealand who has just blown away a field of seasoned professionals to win the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth, Western Australia. The 18-year-old Danny Lee, who had already won the US Amateur Championship, gives the impression of having the physique of a water biscuit and, as is customary these days, hits the ball indecent distances.
There seems to be a fission running through the game at the moment and it could be that somewhere among the numbed ranks who have spent over a decade in the thrall of Woods, something is beginning to stir.
