SCOTLAND'S smoking ban was yesterday hailed a huge success by Jack McConnell, the First Minister, as figures revealed more than 46,000 people tried to quit as a result of the change in the law.

As the country marked the first anniversary of the legislation, it emerged that more than a third of smokers who tried to give up said they remained tobacco-free a month after quitting.
