VENUS Williams came close to appearing invincible on Wednesday, when she won her first-round match against Bethanie Mattek for the loss of just one game. Yesterday, she came close to going out of the tournament.

The defending champion, who had been in one of those loose, distracted moods which afflict her periodically, was within two points of being knocked out by her fellow-American Lisa Raymond at a set and 3-5 down when she finally succeeded in stopping the rot. Once she had secured a foothold in the contest, however, the No 6 seed quickly seized control of the match from Raymond, winning nine games in a row en route to a 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 victory.
