STEPHEN Byers, the former Cabinet minister and a leading Blairite, yesterday called for the abolition of inheritance tax, revealing a rift in the Labour Party and placing the increasingly unpopular policy at the heart of the political agenda.

Mr Byers described the controversial measure as a "tax on death" which was "a penalty on hard work, thrift and enterprise".
