Stamp Duty Threshold Rise Boosts Scottish Homebuyers

MORE than a fifth of Scottish homebuyers have been exempt from paying stamp duty since the threshold for the tax was raised temporarily a year ago, new figures show.

Properties worth less than GBP 125,000 were already exempt from stamp duty, but the government suspended the 1 per cent charge on properties between GBP 125,000 and GBP 175,000 last September to boost the ailing housing market. The window is set to close on Hogmanay, with the gradual market recovery making any extension unlikely.
