SORRY you were out when we called," runs the typical note from Royal Mail pushed through the letter box. "Parcel waiting for collection." Those who trek round to the depot in the hope of collecting some large surprise gift from a distant relative stand to be disappointed.

It's a large item, all right - too big too slot through the conventional letter box. But the bulky package you tear open with feverish excitement is no delightful gift. It's the 226-page annual report from Royal Dutch Shell. Or the 260-page report from Royal Bank of Scotland. It will join the growing pile of blockbuster annual reports that have now become too big to deliver and certainly too daunting to read.
