WELL, it sure seems like Ronald McDonald is recession-proof. While across Britain - not to mention the rest of the world - other restaurant chains are feeling the pinch as their once-loyal customers now scrutinise the menu, shake their heads over the prices and walk on by, the colourful clown's joint appears to be jumping. Now, although there are many people who would gleefully run Mr McDonald out of town, pelting him with Chicken McNuggets as he went, they may now have to stay their hands as a result of yesterday's announcement of a major recruitment drive by the brightly painted japester.
Restaurants are finding it increasingly difficult to make a crust, with the middle-market venues - the likes of Pizza Express, Wagamama, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Bella Pasta - being among those badly hit. Yet at a time when employers are shedding staff like heavy coats in a heatwave, McDonald's is bucking the trend by looking to recruit 4,000 new jobs in Britain, with 302 positions, part and full-time, in Scotland.
