SYRIAN troops will withdraw to the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon by the end of March, the presidents of the two countries agreed at a summit on Sunday. But they have not yet set a date for full withdrawal. The announcement came after weeks of international pressure and protests in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

The former Lord Chancellor Lord Irvine - Tony Blair's friend and boss when he was studying for the Bar - joined 20 Labour rebels to defeat the government over its anti-terror bill on Monday. The vote went 249-119 to ensure that all control orders will be made by the courts and not by ministers.

The Week: 5 -11 March

On Tuesday, it was revealed that the family of the Belfast murder victim Robert McCartney had rejected an IRA offer to shoot his killers. The IRA offered to shoot those directly involved in the 33- year-old's death after a row in a bar on 30 January, and gave the family their names. The former US president Bill Clinton was preparing for further heart surgery, six months after undergoing a quadruple heart bypass operation.
