VETS confirmed on Sunday that the first British case of bluetongue disease - which was found in a Highland cow in Suffolk - was the same strain that had infected livestock on the continent. A four-year-old boy was killed and his 14-year-old sister was left seriously injured after a knife attack in Hull.

Marcel Marceau, the world's most famous mime artist died. He was 84. Great Britain beat Croatia 4-1 in their Davis Cup tennis tie, after which Tim Henman retired from the sport. Scotland were thrashed 40-0 by New Zealand at Murrayfield: Frank Hadden chose to rest his top players ahead of today's World Cup clash with Italy.
