RAISING the threat to high-tech UK jobs, and the potential loss of our foothold in next-generation plane-building expertise, Airbus is playing its last cards in a tense poker match with its US rival Boeing.

It may be that Airbus, which is 20 per cent owned by the UK's BAE Systems, loses its bid to win the GBP 379 million required from the UK government as "launch aid" for the mid-size A350-900 as a result of ferocious American lobbying. But, should the spat with the Americans end up in the political football pitch of the WTO, as is threatened, let it not be said that Airbus underplayed its hand.
