WHILE everyone else in the country has been stocking up on Pimms, pretending to talk knowledgeably about Andy Murray's backhand, and ordering in those nice organic strawberries in preparation for the start of today's Wimbledon, our Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has found little of joy in the summer tradition of the All England tennis tournament.

"Women's tennis has made giant strides in recent years, becoming both highly competitive and extremely entertaining," she wrote tetchily in a letter last week to the All England Lawn Tennis Club committee. "In my view it is anomalous that women receive less prize money than men and this fact is tarnishing the image of the championship."
