AT THE time, he was the punters' pal, but Neil Callan has paid a hefty price for his winning ride aboard Make Haste at Beverley last month, the reward for his efforts being an 11-day ban.

With his mount, who was sent off 7-4 favourite at the Yorkshire track, making heavy weather of living up to his name, Callan had to work overtime to get the partnership home by a neck in a tight finish, but while those who had bet Roger Charlton's runner were delighted, the Beverley stewards were less enamoured and deemed him to be guilty of careless riding.
