You would be wise to think twice about posing for Lucian Freud. David Hockney did. At first he didn't have the necessary three hours a day, three to four days a week, for months or quite possibly years. As this intoxicating, at times frustrating, ut thoroughly fascinating film made clear, the world's greatest living portraitist is demanding of his sitters' time but takes care to look after their bellies. At meal breaks he would serve woodcock, partridge, guinea fowl, all washed down with bottles of vintage champagne. Perhaps this explains why each subject's abdomen looks like soft dough left in the sun once transferred to his easel.
