Underdog Hamilton Eclipses Els
The fifth play-off at the Open since 1995 was only the 18th since 1860. Having won the US Open in an 18-hole play-off against Colin Montgomerie and Loren Roberts in 1994 and the Open at Muirfield in 2002 when he defeated Thomas Levet at the first hole of sudden death, the advantage should have lain with Els, who carded four rounds in the 60s.
