SCOTTISH universities were set on a collision course with the Executive last night after Jack McConnell, the First Minister, insisted they would not be adversely affected by the introduction of top-up fees south of the Border.

Universities Scotland, which represents university principals, said the Executive was "in denial" over funding in the Scottish higher education sector and warned that it would be "economic suicide" if the problem was not addressed.
