A NEW era of fierce regulation of banks was signalled yesterday by the UK's City watchdog, as it prepared ground rules to avoid a repeat of the credit crunch.

Disgraced bankers will be banned from accepting new posts, banks will have their business plans subjected to tight scrutiny and risky investments will only be allowed where they are covered by large capital reserves.
