WELL-off consumers are the ones who have been piling on the most debt in the past year, according to a survey released yesterday.

The Council of Mortgage Lenders' Annual Consumer Survey has revealed that more than a fifth of households with incomes over GBP 30,000 had increased their borrowing in 2003, compared with just 6 per cent of those with household incomes less than GBP 17,499.
