THE strongest patriots are often from lands with colonial roots, which is why Marylyn Abbott tried so hard to create an English cottage garden in Australia.

She began gardening like many others, with the aim of following a traditional style but was soon undone by the difficulty of imposing the cultural inheritance of one part of the world on to another. The English country garden, dangling like a mirage over the horticultural world, is still the idyll many gardeners aspire to no matter where they are based.
