GORDON Brown is today under intense pressure to work out how to return Labour to winning ways after presiding over the party's worst local election results in 40 years.

The scale of the electoral collapse surpassed even Labour's most private fears. As well as slumping behind the Liberal Democrats into third place, the party saw its incumbent Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, unseated by the Tories' Boris Johnson - a result considered unthinkable only a year ago....
