SINCE Friar John Cor first appeared in the Exchequer Rolls with eight bolls of malt in 1494, whisky has been Scotland's number one export and most popular drink.

But the pre-eminence of Scotland's national tipple appears to be under threat, on the verge of being replaced in the UK as a whole by Russia's favourite drink. A new report predicts that within five years vodka sales will outstrip those of all forms of whisky.
